Scouting Heritage: Scoutmasters of 719

Thanks to our Scout Committee Chair Kirt Krammer for pulling this information together.  It was presented to the boys recently as part of their Scouting Heritage Merit Badge.

It might be fun to see if we can get pictures then and now of these brethren, the scouts and activities.  For now - the list is good.

I also recognize that these 16 men had assistance from many great men serving as Assistant Scoutmasters.  That would also be a good list to create.  (If you can help, let me know).

OK - I was thinking I could at least start with those that I know of:

Ron Veater (at least his 2nd stint)
Stan Andrews
John Haight

Former
Mike Irvine
Brian Spencer

Who else am I missing?  If you let me know, I'll add them on.

2013 Scout Jamborall

(Entry By Troop 719 Hisotrian, Corbin Wods)

On September 27-28, we went to the scout jamborall, a mini jamboree sorta thing. We packed and went there on the 27, when we got there, there were tons of people. We eventually found our spot, after what felt like 3 days of walking with the heavy packs on our backs. We set up camp

and then we had dinner, then we played. What we did was we went around and traded cards, they gave us these trading cards and each one had a picture of one of the covers of historical boyscout handbooks. We got the 1965 cards, we each got 15 cards, and we went out to find new camps and cards, to explore the scout jamborall. Marks son, Devin, went out by himself and found almost each card the first night for him and Mark. There were 15 types of cards, some of the rarest ones( the ones that are hard to get from people) were ones we all named " Ghost" and "Blue Face".
There were several activities that any scout could do, like capture the flag, merit badges, and a little duct tape and foam war.  During the night most of the scouts were wrapping up their card collection, and doing merit badges, while Justin and Corbin stayed at the camp and talked. We had sandwiches for dinner, and Mark forgot the mayo, HUGE MISTAKE, so dry sandwiches.

Everyone finally went to bed, the wind howled and howled and howled, it was cold, and the windchill was 23 degrees Fahrenheit. Corbin was the first one out of bed, then Tom, then who ever came out after. We had muffins and bagels for breakfast, then we went to a concert and heard about scouting history. We went and got the Thomas S. Monson award, and partial merit badges. We watched some police officers getting attacked by  Belgium Malinois and telling us about how "good" they were. We eventually drove home, after a quick lunch at burger king, when we got home, we unpacked and went home. It was fun, but were glad its over.

AVIATION Merit Badge

We will begin working on the Aviation merit badge on Wednesday, Nov 6.  We will meet in the basement priesthood room at 7pm.  We will build an FPG-9 airplane!  Doesn't that sound exciting!  It will once you fly it!

Our thanks for this activity (and the upcoming visit to an aviation musuem or site) goes to our resident pilot - President Cawley!

From Troop Historian: Corbin Woods-

All the planes did was loop around us and crash. But didn't burn.

Century of Honor

We are excited that 4 of our boys have been accepted on the production team for the Church's "A Century of Honor".  This is the Church's centennial celebration of Scouting in Utah and the Church.

The boys have been working hard.  School during the day and rehearsals all night for the last week+.  They all have great parts and are in good positions to be seen on camera during the broadcast on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013 to most of the Stake Centers in the USA.

Make sure to take your cell phones to the event - you'll be asked to use them!  President Monsen is scheduled to speak as will the President of the BSA, President David Beck - YM General President and President Wixom - General Primary President.

President Beck said at Jamboral that there would be rapellers and kayakers in the Conference Center, along with some other surprises - I "wonder" how that will work?!  It will be awesome!

Congratulations to Justin Palmer, Thomas Irvine, Adam Johnson & Devin Palmer for their hard work and dedication.  This will be an event that won't be forgotten!

Pictures coming!

here are a couple of pictures from the Deseret News Story

Justin's photo (above) what printed in the Church News section as part of the coverage of this event.

The broadcast can be watched AND dowloaded from  scouts100.lds.org

More pictures will come.

ASTRONOMY Merit Badge

The boys will be earning this merit badge on SATURDAY, November 2, 2013.  Please meet at 8:30 am at Mark Palmer's home.  They will be home around 12:30 for lunch.

What a Successful activity!!  The boys (and leaders) were able to learn new things about the stars and constellations - Can they explain to you what an ASTERISM is (an example is the Big Dipper)?  I didn't before this class!

We learned about telescopes, eclipses, before watching the night skies fly through time in the Dome theater.  We accomplished in two hours what would have taken weeks with out this great technology!

2013 Council Jamboral & Thomas S. Monson Award

We had a great time at the 2013 Great Salt Lake Jamboral  (Sept 27& 28, 2013)!  We celebrated the 100th anniversary of Scouting in Utah.

We may not have been this large, but we were part of a large crowd of Scouts!

We each received 15 of one card (middle row far right: 1965) and traded with the other Scouts to get a complete set of the BSA Handbook cards.  It was fun and we each received a patch for getting the whole set.

General Young Men's President David Beck came a spoke to us.  We are happy that he joined us for a Troop Photo.

Each of the boys stayed up late on Friday and tried to watch Elder Monson's General Conference talk "Run, Boy, Run" from 25 years ago.  The rock concert across the field drowned us out.  So we went to the award booth and earned it there, watching the video and learning how Scouting can influence boys, men and events.  Congratulations to all the Scouts and Leaders who earned this award taking advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity
